Apr.28 (GMM) Heikki Kovalainen will spend a second night in hospital on Monday after his enormous crash during Sunday's Spanish grand prix.

The Finn was airlifted to a hospital in north west Barcelona after becoming wedged under the barriers in a high speed shunt at the Circuit de Catalunya.

His head scans revealed no serious injuries despite losing consciousness on impact, but the 26-year-old is suffering from concussion, officials of the McLaren team have confirmed.

A spokesman of the Hospital General de Catalunya said he is staying in hospital on Monday night to undergo more routine tests.

"I am happy with how Heikki is doing," McLaren doctor Aki Hintsa explained. "Considering the crash he had, he is doing very well."

It also emerged on Monday that Kovalainen's MP4-23 chassis was damaged beyond repair in the 260kph crash.

"It was destroyed, yes," chief executive Martin Whitmarsh confirmed. "A section of about 450-500mm broke off the front of the chassis, but everything worked as it was supposed to."
