BERLIN, Oct 23, 2007 (AFP) - Formula One team McLaren formally appealed Tuesday against the BMW Sauber and Williams teams for their use of allegedly irregular fuel during Sunday´s Brazilian Grand Prix, according to official Norbert Haug.

"It´s not about our team winning the world title by default: we just want to obtain clarification on the rules and that´s in the interest of all teams," Mercedes Sport executive Haug said Tuesday in a press statement.

"This appeal must clarify and confirm the rules concerning the limits of fuel temperature."

McLaren are seeking the disqualification of Nico Rosberg of the Williams-Toyota team, Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld of the BMW Stauber team who came fourth, fifth and six respectively in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The McLaren Mercedes team notified the sports governing body, the FIA, of their intention to appeal within an hour of the stewards´ decision not to punish the BMW Sauber and Williams teams after Sunday´s race, won by Ferrari´s Kimi Raikkonen to claim the drivers´ title.

A statement issued by the stewards at Interlagos on Sunday night said that they could not say for certain that the fuel in the cars was below the 10-degree maximum limit allowed in the regulations.

Raikkonen´s win denied Hamilton´s the driver´s title in his rookie year, by one point, after the 22-year-old Briton finished seventh in Brazil despite leading the championship for much of the season. Hamilton´s McLaren team mate Fernando Alonso came equal second.

Hamilton told the BBC Tuesday he did not wish to win the driver´s title by default. "I want to win the title on the race track", Hamilton said.
